WHAT IS A STROKE

We all know that when blood flow to the heart is interrupted it is called a heart attack. So it is with a stroke or “brain attack” when a blood flow is interrupted on its way to the brain or in the brain – whether it is a blockage or a rupture of the vessel – the brain is deprived of the necessary nutrients and brain cells die quickly.

When brain cells die during a stroke, abilities controlled by that area of the brain are lost and other people are able to observe those classic warning signs that we all dread. When these warning signs occur get help immediately –

  1. speech – either yours is slurry or you do not understand others speaking.
  2. coordination – lose control of extremity movement like with walking.
  3. balance  - have sudden onset of dizziness – vertigo.
  4. headache – worst sudden head pain ever – could be an aneurysm rupture.
  5. passing out – often called syncope (SIN co pee).
  6. vision – blurring or like a “shade” dropping over either eye – usually one.

If a loved one is having stroke symptoms, seek emergency medical attention without delay.
If a loved one is not having stroke symptoms, take them out to lunch and get a screening today.
